Headphones & Accessories

Headphones reviewed in my videos or used by me in my professional work. All of these are closed-back designs suitable for use by live sound engineers.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x

This is my first pair of Audio-Technica headphones. Despite the tremendous popularity of the M50x, I was never satisfied with their sound when it came to professional use – in particular the excessive bass response.

After considerable research I recently purchased a pair of M40xs, which I am pleased to say are far more linear in their frequency response and much better suited to critical listening applications, whether in recording or live sound. They also fold and feature detachable cables: you get two, a long straight and a long curly, with a short straight cable available separately.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro

Still my first choice for live sound monitoring headphones. Excellent isolation, extreme sonic honesty and built like a tank, fully-serviceable construction. My first pair is over ten years old and still going strong.

Beyerdynamic DT 250

Another excellent option for live sound use. Not as heavily constructed as the 770s and with smaller earcups but with the same transparent sound and an overall lighter weight.

Sony MDR 7506

For many years the standard studio and live sound monitoring headphones. Still useful despite being a very old design. However they are NOT very honest sonically and should not be used to make critical EQ decisions.

Sony MDR 7510

A HUGE improvement in fidelity over the 7506s, although still not as honest as the two Beyer models. Also these do not fold like the 7506s and have some of the same construction issues eg the earpads/headband falling apart after a relatively short time. Full review coming soon!
